Outsider
I
dwell in the outskirts:
But
from maps and observation
Well
know men’s intricate cities.
I
understand their tongues and music:
In
masks, in disguises
Have
forayed often in their territory.
I
have grown quite like them -
Taken
part in their ceremonies
And
been approved, but not discovered.
I
even loved one of their women - once, -
But
she perceived my strangeness
And turned away to safety.
