Annual Battle of Jarama commemoration

A benefit concert will take place The Maltings Arts Theatre, St Albans, at 8pm on 6 December to raise funds for a memorial statue by local sculptor Frank Casey of Thomas Watters, one of the last surviving British veteran of the Spanish Civil War until his death early last year at the age of 99. Though born in Scotland, Thomas lived in St Albans after his return from Spain, where he served with the Scottish Ambulance Unit from 1936-38. 

7 December 2013 from 7pm: “No Pasarán: A Night To Remember” gala evening of music, film, comedy and spoken word to mark the 75th anniversary of the return of the British Battalion from Spain; at Rich Mix arts centre, 35-47 Bethnal Green Road, London E1 6LA. Performers and speakers include Mark Steel, Thee Faction, Maxine Peake, Francesca Beard, Lydia Syson, Maddy Carty, Bob Crow, Richard Baxell, Paul Mason and Salma Yaqoob.

From 15-19 October 2013: Première of “¡No Pasarán!” musical by Roy Gaynor and Doug Gould; 7.30pm-10.30pm (plus 2pm matinée on the 19th) at the De La Salle Theatre, St Catherine’s Road, Southbourne BH6 4AH; tickets from £11; more information and booking: [].
